Our history

1995: The birth of a pioneering environmental organisation

Creation of APESA (Association Pôle Environnement Sud Aquitain). The organisation brings together local authorities, industry and scientists to explore the way forward, support initiatives and facilitate debate.

2001–2006: Structuring expertise and first research projects

This period saw the creation of an experimental technical platform focused on the study of anaerobic digestion and composting, and a legal resources centre, as well as the gradual integration of the human dimension into the analysis of environmental issues.
APESA obtained its first Research Tax Credit (CIR) approval.

2006–2015: Broadening fields of action and institutional recognition

In 2006, APESA created CHEDD (now renamed Parcours Transitions), strengthening its training and knowledge dissemination activities.
The merger with ESTIA Innovation made it possible to integrate the challenges of eco-innovation, product design, and impacts on the environment and lifestyles.
This period saw the development and consolidation of R&D activities in eco-innovation and biomass valorisation, as well as certification as a Technology Resources Centre (CRT).

2016–2019: A territorial and multidisciplinary approach

APESA strengthened its cross-cutting approach by integrating the human and social sciences, notably environmental economics and geography, around the challenges of creating territorial value.
At the same time, R&D expanded into biomass valorisation, particularly microalgae.

2020–2024: Scientific acceleration and thematic expansion

Work intensified on biodegradability in anaerobic digestion, composting and methanation, with the transfer and expansion of the technical platform in Montardon.
APESA broadened its areas of analysis to include multi-risk issues, territorial water management and psychology.
This period was also marked by the integration of the Carnot Institute MICA, strengthening the organisation’s scientific and partnership foundations.

2025: Towards collective governance of transitions

APESA reached a major milestone with its transformation into a Société Coopérative d’Intérêt Collectif (SCIC), affirming shared governance in support of environmental, social and economic transitions.
